Spiritual Harmony

Many boomers are discovering that something is missing. Increasingly, they are looking for deeper meaning, greater satisfaction and new direction in life. The number of Baby Boomers that choose to follow religious patterns of their ancestors has decreased. While many babyboomers are uninformed about the richness and diversity of their own religious traditions, their plaits and hostility are understandable. Many women have no further patience for a patriarchal church that evolves glacially at best. Sexual abuse or hypocrisy by some clergy, historical injustices perpetrated by the churches on our aboriginals, unwillingness to accommodate progressive forces — all have dimmed the attraction of institutionalized religion.

Alternative medicine
The baby boomer is seeking an extension for good health using conventional medicines and alternative options. Frequently, medical evaluation of current health management contradicts previously acceptable therapies. All to often, injuries and death occur to patients that followed doctors instructions. The baby boomer generation demands answers and alternatives from their physicians. This generation will not go gracefully to the rocking chair. The following article expands on this theory.

Resistance Training
Almost everything you have ever bought came with an owner's manual, instruction book, or at the very least, a tag letting you know exactly how to properly care for that item so that it does not wear out prematurely. YOU DID NOT!
RESIST AGINGTM remedies this. It provides scientifically valid information that will enable you to stay young, healthy and more beautiful longer than you had ever expected to. It is your owner's manual in a tutorial DVD, and is loaded with information which will continually make you exclaim..."How come nobody ever told me this?"
For instance, did you know that...
After age 30, a person will lose an average of half a pound of muscle a year unless they do something to keep it?
Aerobic exercise does nothing to maintain this muscle...and may promote further loss?
Growth Hormone ("GH") decreases 14% per decade after age 30, resulting in many age related symptoms?
Resistance Exercise and Proper Diet is one of the most effective ways to increase GH levels?
Testosterone levels decrease after age 30?
You can elevate testosterone levels with proper resistance training?
Cortisol levels increase with age, resulting in many age-related symptoms?
Proper nutrition and exercise limits cortisol levels?
Resistance training has a HUGE advantage over aerobic training in correcting declining hormonal levels associated with age?
High insulin levels caused by high glycemic foods are responsible for making you fat, increased blood pressure, tumor cell growth, high cholesterol levels, plaque build-up in arteries, diabetes, low HGH levels, and high cortisol levels?
Low/no fat diets result in low testosterone levels?
No carbohydrate diets result in high cortisol levels?
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day?
You should not eat late at night or before going to bed?
You will lose a larger percentage of fat with resistance exercise than with aerobics?
You will build more bone density with resistance exercise than with aerobics?
Resistance exercise strengthens your heart ?
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends resistance exercise for people diabetes?
Resistance Exercise will actually improve memory ?
You will elevate your metabolism with resistance exercise?
Resistance training decreases the symptoms of depression?
Resistance training decreases the severity of hot flashes associated with menopause?
Resistance exercise should take no longer than 45 minutes per session?
You'll get better results with short workouts than with longer workouts?
The most important part of weight lifting is the lowering?
You must alter your routines for continued results?
Resistance training can be FUN?

Exercise has proven to be effective in improving health on many levels. Exercise helps with weight control, improves cardiovascular health, increases muscle mass, decreases propensity for many diseases, decreases stress and improves mental health. In todays lingo - it is a win-win option. A mere 20 minute brisk walk daily is a healthy practice for all baby boomers to adopt.

What Your Daily Supplement Should ContainThere are certain essential ingredients that are critical requirements for any excellent multi-vitamin. Use this analysis to see how your multi stacks up. For each ingredient, compare my recommended daily amounts and forms with what you're getting in your daily multi-vitamin.Natural Carotenoids color fruits and vegetables and provide excellent antioxidant protection. Betatene is a natural blend with the beta-carotene being the major component. 5,000 IU is an optimal level. FloraGLO® standardized lutein at 120 mg (providing 6 mg elemental) promotes healthy vision. The most popular mass-market multi contains only ¼ of a mg, which is a low level that has not been shown to provide benefits.Natural vitamin E and tocopherols provide excellent protection from cholesterol oxidation and promote a healthy immune system. Vitamin E may also protect brain and memory health. Natural vitamin E at 400 to 800 IU per day is optimal. The natural form is up to three times more effective than synthetic (most cheap mass-market multis use the synthetic form and provide levels that are grossly inadequate). It's also critical to include the gamma form to eliminate a toxic free radical that the alpha form does not.B-Complex vitamins include folic acid, B1, B2, niacin, B5, B6 and B12. B vitamins are critical for producing energy and maintaining a healthy heart and nervous system. Folic acid, B6 and B12 are believed to lower a toxic compound called homocysteine. People with elevated levels of homocysteine have up to five times greater risk of poor cardiovascular health, compared to elevated cholesterol levels. Levels and forms are critical for the best results. For optimal homocysteine levels, 800 to 1,000 mcg of folic acid, 50 to 100 mg B6 and 500 mcg to 2,000 mcg of B12 are recommended. It's important for the B12 to be in a form called methylcobalamin. This is the active form of B12 and is up to one hundred times more potent when compared to other forms used in most multi-vitamins. Calcium Citrate Malate, Magnesium Taurate/Citrate and Vitamin D provide the nutrients required to maintain healthy bones. Most men do no realize this, but as they age, they also lose bone mass just as women do. There was a large double-blind, placebo study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed 500 mg (elemental) of calcium citrate malate and 700 IU of vitamin D actually increased bone mass in the elderly and reduced the fracture rates by 60%1. Magnesium is known for promoting bone and cardiovascular health. Calcium citrate malate is a form of calcium that's up to ten times better absorbed, compared to calcium carbonate (ground-up rock that has the adverse effect of neutralizing stomach acid required to digest your food!). It takes a gross amount of 2,000 mg calcium citrate malate to equal 500 mg elemental. Nutraceutical Sciences Institute® (NSI®) quotes all calcium and magnesium levels as elemental and uses the required gross amount to achieve these levels. Many products on the market quote the gross levels on their labels versus elemental.Selenium and chromium are micronutrient minerals that provide excellent benefits if the right forms and levels are used. Selenium is believed to promote overall cellular health. High levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium also appear to promote healthy vision. Chromium in the form of polynicotinate (ChromeMate®) is vastly superior to other forms. It's several times more effective at assisting insulin utilization. Chromium promotes optimal blood sugar and insulin levels. It's believed to increase lean muscle and reduces body fat. A dose of 200 to 400 mcg per day is optimal.Bioflavonoids and polyphenols are believed be more effective antioxidants when compared to vitamins E and C. The best sources of these are standardized red wine, green tea, grape seed (the Activin® form is the best studied, with many proven benefits), quercetin and citrus. Green tea is believed to protect the brain and promote cellular health. High levels of quercetin (found in apples) promotes cardiovascular and neurological health. It's critical to use standardized forms and look for combined levels of 250 mg to 500 mg in total of these powerful antioxidants.Garlic, Ginkgo, Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) and CoQ10 provide incredible antioxidant benefits for the brain and cardiovascular system. Ginkgo has been shown to promote circulation and provide benefits for memory. ALA recycles other antioxidants and protects the nervous system. Garlic protects the blood vessels from oxidizing and is believed to promote cardiovascular health. The average person receives 1 mg per day of CoQ10, no ginkgo, little garlic and little ALA, What's more, most multis do not even include these ultra-effective and expensive nutrients. A good multi should contain 10 to 60 mg per day of CoQ10, 400 to 900 mg per day of garlic, and 30 to 120 mg per day of ginkgo and ALA.The Ideal Multi-VitaminsIf you'd like to receive superior benefits with the above nutrients and more in the correct forms and levels, use NSI®'s Synergy Multi-Vitamin or Synergy Women's Multi-Vitamin. Compare your current multi and decide if your body deserves the added benefits discussed, at a great value and with the convenience of one supplement.

March 6, 2007 -- Baby boomers appear to be heading for retirement in worse shape than their elders born in the years before World War II.
That's according to a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The study shows that baby boomers aged 51-56 report worse health and more pain, drinking, psychiatric problems, and difficulty with daily physical tasks than their predecessors.
"This trend portends poorly for the future health of boomers as they age and incur increasing costs associated with health care and medications," the researchers write.
They include Beth Soldo, PhD, Distinguished Senior Scholar in the University of Pennsylvania's sociology department.
Evidence based data encourages the Baby Boomer set to redirect their efforts at promoting good health and preventing illnesses. A conserted effort must be made to alter current life styles to ensure a longer, happier and healthier future for the aging population.

Baby Boomers
People born between (and including) 1946 and 1964. After American soldiers returned home from World War II in1946, the United States experienced an explosion of births (hence the name baby boom) that continued for the next 18 years, when the birth rate began to drop. In 1964, baby boomers represented 40% of the population, which means that more than one third of the population was under 19 years of age. In the 1990s, approximately 76 million people in the United States were born in the baby boom years, representing approximately 29% of the country's population. Since baby boomers make up such a sizable portion of the consuming public, their spending habits and lifestyles have a powerful influence on the economy. Baby boomers compose the largest generation demographic in history with women outnumbering the men. Women are continuing to work in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. Women posses the power to influence the world as never before. This reminds me of the song, "I am woman, hear me roar."
Go Girl!

Welcome to my blog!

Hi, My name is Mary Lou and I am currently enrolled in a Master in Management class. One of the courses required is a research class that includes the creation of a blog. This is my first experience with blogging. Since I'm a baby bommer, one subject that is of great interest to me is optimizing health and preventing illnesses in the aging population.
