Boomers and the Work Force
According to an AARP Bulletin article (April 2007, Vol. 48, no.4), only about 15% of those over 65 are in the work force today. In 1948, major league baseball general manager, Bill Veeck made a daring and innovative decision to hire Satchel Paige. Satchel changed history as the first African American to pitch for the majors. Paige was recalled to the majors when he was 59 and pitched 3 shutout innings for the Kansas City Athletics against the Boston Red Socks, then he retired. We are now in the 21st century and it's time to rethink current strategies about when to work and when to retire. Flextime, ergonomically safe work environments and telecommunications would go a long way to assist older workers in remaining in the work force and would address the work shortage problem. " We need more Sarchel Paiges, and we need more Bill Veecks- people who want to work forever, and bosses creative and imaginative enough to give them that opportunity. - The Editor" Many elderly people have a financial issue requiring them to continue to work. Boomers should work until they are ready to retire.

Excellent post! Boomers should work until THEY are ready to retire. Their employeers need to recognize what benefits the Boomers have to offer and do what they can to incorporate them into the workforce. Nice insight. Thank you.

I agree with Chris--employers need to be creative and create shifts that work as many Boomers need to work whether for financial reasons or social reasons--we have a needed assignment ahead of us in Nursing management.Happy Sunday morning

Hi Mary Lou,
What a great article combining Baby Boomers with your love for sports. This gives some us us (soon to be retirees)hope that we are not ready to retire until we are truly ready. After retirement it is nice to know that will be welcomed back (hopefully)to the work force whether in the same or different job role. In years past, so much energy has been devoted to the younger generations. I hope that the Boomers will continue to gain the recognition that they deserve. Looking forward to more articles on this subject.

I totally agree that people should be able to work as long as they want and employers should make it easier for the older worker. In the Nursing profession, we are going to have to do whatever we can to keep the aging nurses working or we will be facing critical problems including a "brain drain". Thanks for the excellent posting.
